IMC hosts focus group discussions to design an effective conflict resolution program in northern Lebanon.
Akkar, Lebanon, April 2008 -- International Medical Corps (IMC) and its strategic local partner, Secours Populaire Libanais, Al Najda Al Sha’abiyah, have implemented a conflict resolution program in northern Lebanon to promote tolerance. Launched in one of the country’s most vulnerable districts, Akkar, the program aims to directly impact 5,000 people, and benefit another 15,000 in the surrounding areas. The program brings together different ethnicities and religious affiliations through diversity trainings, youth activities, and focus groups in three rehabilitation centers. IMC further empowers marginalized groups through vocational training that works to improve livelihoods throughout the region.

Negatively impacted by the 2006 war and ongoing political instability, the Akkar region struggles with common symptoms of poverty, such as lack of employment, high population density, and low literacy rates. By directly communicating with teachers, parents, local leaders, health workers, and other members of the community, International Medical Corps identified the need for a full-scale development and intervention program with emphasis on participation from Akkar residents. Building on its previous experience in similar projects, the conflict resolution and livelihoods program adds to IMC’s existing activities in Akkar, including: school rehabilitation, mental health care, and basic medical training.

This project was done with the support of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Organization for Transition Initiatives (OTI).
