General Electric Foundation awards International Medical Corps $500,000 grant for humanitarian crisis in Darfur

December 12, 2006

International Medical Corps is one of three groups to share $2 million in emergency grants from the GE Foundation for its work in the Darfur region of Sudan. CARE and UNICEF are also receiving funds.

The funding will enable all three organizations to help meet the health, nutrition, water, sanitation, emergency and other needs of residents who have been displaced by the escalating humanitarian crisis in the region. IMC will use its one-half-million dollar portion of the grant to continue existing programs, which serve nearly 300,000 people.
“The goal of International Medical Corps is to reduce mortality and morbidity rates among the affected population in the Darfur region. The financial contribution from GE’s philanthropic organization sends an extraordinary statement about their commitment to support those affected by this tragic situation,” said Nancy Aossey, president & CEO of IMC.

Nearly three million people have been affected by the conflict in Sudan’s vast western region of Darfur, triggering what is widely viewed as the worst humanitarian crisis in recent years. Estimates of those who have perished in or around the conflict run into the hundreds of thousands and about two million have been forced to flee their homes. Those trapped by the conflict have had to rely almost exclusively on international agencies, including IMC, for their survival.

IMC has been providing critical emergency medical services for conflict-affected residents of South and West Darfur since July 2004. With a focus on children under five and women of reproductive age, IMC has implemented a range of services to meet the needs of a targeted population of over 288,000 individuals who have been severely traumatized by the region’s ongoing violence.

About the GE Foundation – The GE Foundation, the philanthropic organization of the General Electric Company, works to strengthen educational opportunity for disadvantaged children and youth globally and supports GE employee and retiree giving and involvement in GE communities around the world.
